Broccoli Orecchiette

Why it's great during the follicular phase of your cycle

During the follicular phase, when your body is recovering from menstruation and preparing for ovulation, you may find yourself craving dishes packed with vegetables. Broccoli is our favorite during this phase because it's packed with essential nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, calcium, and iron. Plus, broccoli stems contain a compound called DIM (diindolylmethane). This healthy compound contributes positively to estrogen balance. Studies also suggest that DIM may offer protection against hormone-dependent cancers such as breast and prostate cancer and may help reduce PMS and menopausal symptoms, although further research is needed.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large broccoli
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 4 anchovy fillets, in oil
  • 2 knobs of butter
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • 350 grams orecchiette
  • 150 grams Parmesan cheese

Instructions:

  • Cut the broccoli florets from the stem. Peel the stem of the broccoli and grate it finely.
  • Place a non-stick pan on the stove, melt a knob of butter and sauté the garlic for about 1 minute.
  • Add the shredded broccoli, anchovy fillets and chili flakes to the pan and let it cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Cook the orecchiette according to the instructions on the package and add the broccoli florets to the water during the last 4 minutes.
  • Drain the pasta and broccoli and mix everything together in the other pan.
  • Season with salt, black pepper, the rest of the butter and Parmesan cheese.
