When did your last period start? If you know right away, good for you! You clearly know your cycle inside and out, and that's great. If you have no idea, it might be time to download a cycle tracking app.
Why bother tracking your period?
Tracking your period can be very helpful. It can not only alert you when your period is due, but it can also teach you a lot about your own patterns and mood swings. It can also help you stay in tune with your own body. Many apps also allow you to track symptoms, sleep patterns, and any supplements you might need for your period or fertility.
An app can also be a useful guide for avoiding pregnancy or helping you conceive. If you're trying to conceive, it's also a good idea to track your basal temperature and analyze your cervical mucus ( click here to learn more!). If you don't want to get pregnant, don't rely solely on the app and make sure you're using some form of contraception.
We spoke with the Guud team about which apps they'd recommend and compiled a list of our favorites. Here are our picks:
Natural Cycles
Morgane (founder of Guud Woman) uses Natural Cycles, an app that measures your fertility based on your basal body temperature. "Every morning, I take my temperature with the thermometer that came with it and enter the data into the app."
The app then predicts your ovulation and fertility, becoming more accurate the more information you add. The app shows you each day's status: green for "it's okay to have unprotected sex" and red for "not, unless you want a baby!" You can also toggle this option in the app so the data can be used to tell you when you're most likely to conceive, if you're trying for a baby. If you're using Natural Cycles to prevent pregnancy, be sure to check your temperature daily.
Natural Cycles is the only certified birth control app, meaning you can use it as a contraceptive, and this method doesn't contain any artificial hormones, so we're fans!
The app costs €64.99 per year or €8.99 per month and the thermometer is delivered free by post.
Flo
Flo is another app we like and it is perhaps the most well-known among women.
Just like Natural Cycles, Flo gives you predictions about your ovulation and fertile days based on your cycle data. This is based on the information you enter into the app, such as the dates and length of your past periods and certain symptoms like cramps, mood swings, etc.
If you're fertile, the days will be highlighted in turquoise. It will also choose your ovulation day, noting that it has a "high chance of getting pregnant." The days before ovulation and a few days afterward are marked with a "high chance of getting pregnant," while the days highlighted in black have a low chance of pregnancy.
We love the notifications the app sends and how it becomes more accurate over time. It's easy to set up and requires little maintenance.
Like Natural Cycles, Flo is a subscription-based app. It costs about €10 per month.
Fitbit
If you own a Fitbit, you might already be aware of its menstrual tracking features, but what you might not know is that you can use the app on your phone without a Fitbit device. It's less comprehensive than Natural Cycles and Flo, but with the Fitbit app, you can also track your cycle, log periods, record details, and view trends. It also predicts your "fertile window" and sends notifications when your period is due.
Miranda, Guud Content Manager, used this app for a long time to track her cycle. “I loved how simple it was. The notifications were also super helpful. I always forget when my period is due. It was super helpful to see the notification pop up on my phone to remind me to put a few tampons in my bag before leaving the house!”
The app is free to download for iPhone or Android devices.
Clue
Clue also scored highly with the Guud team. The app claims to teach you a lot about your body, so if you weren't paying attention in sex ed class, this one's for you.
This app provides both period and PMS predictions based on the information you enter. All your data is neatly stored in a clear overview that helps you easily analyze and see trends. The app developers also regularly collaborate with scientists and universities, so they are always working on improvements.
The basic app is free to use, but Clue Plus, which includes extra features, costs about $10 per year.
FitrWoman
We love this app because it not only tracks your cycle but also gives you personalized advice on exercise and nutrition based on your hormonal changes throughout your cycle. How cool is that?
Based on your cycle, the app tells you when to push harder during a workout and when to take it easy. It will also recommend foods and recipes that can help reduce period-related symptoms, boost your energy, and support recovery.
The app is free to download for iPhone and Android devices.
Jennis CycleMapping
CycleMapping, brought to you by Olympic gold medalist Jessica Ennis-Hill and Dr. Emma Ross, is the next step in Jessica's portfolio of apps for exercise, pregnancy, and postpartum. It's more than just a period tracking app: it offers personalized training programs based on your unique patterns, symptoms, and personal goals.
So it can recommend things like a yoga session on menstrual days to relieve cramps. Or, in the first half of your cycle, when your estrogen levels are highest, it can recommend a HIIT workout. Training according to your cycle is definitely a good idea (we wrote a whole blog post about it!), so we're big fans of this app.
The app is free to try and costs approximately €18 per year on iPhone and Android devices.
Ovia Fertility
Our final pick is Ovia Fertility, which is perfect if you're hoping to avoid your period! This app is technically a fertility tracker designed to help you conceive. Besides tracking your period, it has several other features that let you monitor things like your basal body temperature and cervical mucus. (Want to learn more about what your cervical mucus says about your cycle? Check out our blog post about it!)
The app is also free with an option for a premium version with additional features and personalized health support.
Aavia is an app popular with Gen Z but designed for anyone who wants to gain more insight into their hormonal cycle. Aavia offers personalized insights, recommendations, and educational resources that are helpful for users of all ages.
