What does chromium do in your body?
Chromium plays a role in insulin function in the body and carbohydrate metabolism. Chromium is also called the glucose tolerance factor (GTF).
How do you know if you have a chromium deficiency?
As far as we know, chromium deficiency does not occur. However, severe malnutrition can lead to a chromium deficiency. This can lead to:
- an increased glucose concentration in the blood
- elevated cholesterol levels in the blood
- weight loss
These symptoms may be attributed to other deficiencies or problems, so always consult a doctor if you experience them persistently or are concerned.
Which foods contain chromium?
Chromium is found in small amounts in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and meat and liver. Most products contain less than 5 micrograms per serving, but grain products can contain higher levels of chromium.
